Domaine des Berthiers, Pouilly Fume, Loire, France
The Pouilly-Fumé wines produced by Domaine “Des Berthiers” are generous, almost full-bodied and exhibit the rich, spicy and smoky nuances of the Sauvignon Blanc varietals.
The vineyards of Domaine des Berthiers of previous owner and wine personality Jean- Claude Dagueneau are situated in “Berthiers”, in the village of Saint-Andelain. Jean Claude Dagueneau was one of the key driving personalities of the Pouilly-Fumé appellation, next to the La Doucette family. His name and wines are world famous. They are served in well known restaurants like Fouquets in Paris. When his health became more of an issue to run the vinyards the Domaine became part of Maison Fournier. The Pouilly-Fumé vineyards are located on the siliceous hillside south west along side the Loire river facing the vineyards of Sancerre. As a result the vineyard benefits from well drained soils and very good exposure favoring the production of grapes that result in well ageing and complex wines. Vinification includes a slow, temperature regulated fermentation process for a period of three or four weeks, which allows the maximum extraction of aromas. Ageing on its fine lees adds richness and gives this wine its “fumé” taste. The Pouilly-Fumé wines produced by the domaine are full-bodied and exhibit the rich, spicy and smoky nuances of the Sauvignon Blanc varietals.
